چکیده

We have developed a visual system which adapts for varying illumination. The system has three features. First, the intenaity of the image is kept constant by automatically adjusting the iris value which i s a camera parameter. Semnd, t.lw gray levels of itn image portion or the user's interest are averaged on the assumptiorl illat localized illumination changes uniformly, and the difference between the obtained gray level average and a pred~t~rnl ined reference value is calculated as an illumination variable. Third, the iris value, which zeroes the illu~nination variable, is estimated linearly I>ecause the r~lationship betwccn the iris value and the gray level averagr can be locally approximated by a linear function. TJIP system was evaluatt:d with it11 edhe dt.tectioir, wliile changing the illumination in a variety of ways. The syst rm proved capable of detecting edges more stably and r~lial,ly than w h ~ n the systcm was not used.

Illumination Invariant Imaging: Applications in Robust Vision-based Localisation, Mapping and Classification for Autonomous Vehicles

In this paper we propose the use of an illumination invariant transform to improve many aspects of visual localisation, mapping and scene classification for autonomous road vehicles. The illumination invariant colour space stems from modelling the spectral properties of the camera and scene illumination in conjunction, and requires only a single parameter derived from the image sensor specifica...

Contrast- and illumination-invariant object recognition from active sensation.

It has been suggested that the deleterious effect of contrast reversal on visual recognition is unique to faces, not objects. Here we show from priming, supervised category learning, and generalization that there is no such thing as general invariance of recognition of non-face objects against contrast reversal and, likewise, changes in direction of illumination. However, when recognition varie...

Spectral Gradient: A Surface Reflectance Measurement Invariant to Geometry and Incident Illumination

Although photometric data is a readily available dense source of information in intensity images, it is not widely used in computer vision. A major drawback is its dependence on viewpoint and incident illumination. A novel methodology is presented which extracts reflectivity information of the various materials in the scene independent of incident light and scene geometry. A scene is captured u...

An Illumination Invariant Image Descriptor for Color Image Matching

Color image descriptors have been used extensively and successfully in many computer vision applications. However, object colors are sensitive to illumination changes which in turns will affect the performance of object recognition if the image descriptors used are not robust to these changes. To increase photometric invariance and discriminative power, this study proposes an image descriptor f...

Novel Methods for Extracting Illumination-invariant Images and Fast Classification of Textures

In this thesis we propose a standardized method for extracting illumination-invariant images and a novel approach for classifying textures. Experiments are also extended to include object classification using the proposed methods. The illumination-invariant image is a useful intrinsic feature latent in color image data. Existing methods of extracting the invariant image are dependent upon the c...
